Shot Up North was created by photographers, for photography — and has grown into a creative community connecting professional photographic talent with the wider creative industry.

1988 → NOW

IT STARTED IN THE NORTH

The first SUN exhibition was an open submission shown at Viewpoint Gallery, housed in the Old Fire Station at Salford.

It became an annual event, competitively selected and curated, showcasing the work of professionals living and working commercially “at the northern end of the M1 motorway”.

The idea came from a group of Northern-based members of the Association of Fashion Advertising and Editorial Photographers — AFAEP (now AOP).

Planning for the annual event took place at meetings over CHEESE + BEER in Dukes ’92.

THEN IT GREW

• 1993 the SUN BOOK • 2000 SUN website • 2005 SUN went independent re-branding as SHOT UP NORTH'S SUN AWARDS
• 2022 a new look for the SUN exhibition • 2023 new collaborations Channel4 and BBC • 2026 building an expanding community...

Technology has changed.
