Hot date in the SUN is a 20 year old!
The SUN Awards is the hot date in the calendar for Northern photography.
Now in its twentieth year, SUN (Shot Up North) has been responsible for showcasing around 1,000 cutting-edge, artistic, stunning images by the best northern photographers over a period of immense artistic and technical change within the industry
SUN organisers Doug Currie and Ed Horwich have witnessed the changes first hand in their own studios. They also have found the time each year to ceaselessly champion what they consider to be the unique talents of the best commercial photographers, practicing in the UK regions, in the exhibition and accompanying catalogue that is the SUN Awards.
“One of my images was in the very first show and here we are two decades on running the show and making sure regional photographers receive the attention they deserve.” Said Ed. “The 20th anniversary has been a record year for entries. We are very pleased to see established names alongside some excellent new talent.”
The SUN Awards were established in Manchester in 1988 with a first exhibition showing at the Viewpoint Gallery in the Old Fire Station, Salford. The aim was to bring together professional photographers working in advertising and marketing, so that they could benefit from unifying at a time when the photography industry was fragmenting in the face of change.
“You can look through the SUN books and see how these photographers have developed and how they’ve become more confident, they have an air of people who just really know their business.” Says Martin Beckett, former chairman of the Association of Photographers.
Doug Currie picks up the story:
“It’s gratifying to see that along with a constant influx of newcomers, many photographers who entered the Awards in its fledgling years are still doing so today; their pictures showing their evolvement in style, content and media. Sitting side by side in the catalogue and crossing over two decades, each photographer can assess their work in comparison to their peers, looking at changes in both the current creative climate and changes in technology and not least how they have progressed in their careers.”
The winners will be announced on November 6 at a special event to be held at the Lowry Hotel, Manchester.
The ceremony kicks off an exhibition of all 50 images that have made it into the highly prized SUN catalogue, a publication that has performed a sterling job of introducing commercial photographers to agencies and clients.

Special Edition prints showcase Northern photographers
Where can you rub shoulders with superheroes in fast food joints or artic choughs in the style of a Hitchcock movie or even take in the atmosphere of a shimmering Venetian sunrise. The answer is amongst the images of the SUN Awards Special Edition.
Launching on October 2 at exciting new photography venue Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club in Manchester, the special edition prints will be on display in an exhibition which will run until November. The prints are a snapshot of the best of creative photography from the entrants of this year’s SUN Awards, the winners of which will be announced in Manchester on 6th. November.
The special edition prints, selected by the curators of the exhibition – Claire Turner from Comme Ça Art in Manchester and Sam Knowles from Newcastle’s Biscuit Factory – present a diverse range of captured moments that are at times funny, soulful and inspirational. Claire Turner commented:
“There are some fantastic photographic images widely available nowadays from retailers like Habitat and Ikea but this is the only place where you can pick up original, often personal work by professional, commercial photographers that is rarely displayed publicly, let alone available to take home. It’s exciting to have the exclusive opportunity of exhibiting such a diverse range of images all together, showing the different ways photographers have of looking at the world.”
The Special Edition Prints comprise of 30 different images from 27 photographers, with just 25 of each available, including:
• Dramatic coastal seascapes from the beaches at Crosby and South Shields
• dogs snoozing in the Philippines sun
• unmistakably northern scenes including the bright lights of Manchester and a magical night-time forest at Stainburn near Harrogate.
• black and white shots of teenage boys in Iran, happily chatting and smoking
• the shapes and shadows of the opera house in Valencia
• dramatic views of Cape Wrath, a mountainous peak in Sutherland
• the Victoria Baths in Manchester, striking in its faded grandeur
• a lake of floating, vibrant, festival lanterns in Manchester
• a red phone box on the North Yorkshire moors against a bright blue sky.
The show at Matt & Phred’s is the only chance in the North West to see limited edition prints from some of best photographers currently working in the North of England up close. For anyone looking to snap up the special edition prints to hang on their own wall, they will be available from 2 October by contacting Manchester art agency, Comme Ça Art; online from www.shotupnorth.co.uk or from The Biscuit Factory when the exhibition shows there in March 2009.

November 2007
2007 SUN AWARDS announced
This year’s SUN Awards were presented at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester on 15th November 2007.
These are awarded for the best professional photography executed by photographers based in the northern regions of the UK, working within the disciplines of design, advertising, editorial or fashion.
“SUN is a good thing because… its an independent showcase run by photographers outside London, which I think is a very honourable.” Andy Cheetham (Creative Director CheethamBell JWT)
The SUN 2007 the judges have yet again selected an astonishing crop of fresh, new images created by photographers from as far North as the Isle of Arran down to the Midlands.
Winner of the Best Image award was John Baxter, a photographer based in Cumbria.
“The shoot was commissioned by New Holland Publishers for a book called No Place Like Home, author Richard Jarman. When setting up the shot I was trying to get the look of a typical English garden scene to contrast with the slightly bizarre background, and included the red flowers to emphasize the contrasts in the picture. It’s a straight shot taken on colour transparency film with a Mamiya RB, and there’s a sense of whimsy to it that I really like. ”
- John Baxter (winner)
In second place was an image by Rob Evans. Rather than award third place, the judges took an unprecedented step and gave Merit distinction to 7 other images by photographers Carl Hodgson, Jill Jennings, Andrew Livesey, Adam Murray-Brown, Rufus Crosby and Mike Slawski.
In the Best Use of an Image Tim Ainsworth walked away with both 1st place for his picture for Vimto, and 3rd place for his moody demon car image for the IAM road safety campaign. Second place went to Christian McGowan for his image for ASH anti smoking campaign.
The Best Promotion of a Photographer awards went to three web sites 1st Jonathan Oakes (www.jonathanoakes.com), 2nd Jan and Emily Dixon (www.andthewardrobe.co.uk), 3rd Chris Leah (www.chrisleah.com)
“SUN is quite a special competition to judge and as always and enjoyable one. I have to applaud this years judges for both their decisiveness and their passion in arguing for their choices. As photographers, designers, editors and exhibition curators of note they are a tough panel to please.”

SUN RETURNS TO NEWCASTLE
The successful SUN Awards (Shot Up North) returns to Newcastle’s Biscuit Factory, next month. The exhibition, which opens on the 9th March, features superb examples of professional photography shot in the north of England.
SUN is a selected show featuring the best advertising, design, editorial and fashion photography. This year the high level of competition meant that just 30 out of a total of 70 entrants had their work accepted.
Following on from strong interest when SUN visited the Biscuit Factory last year, SUN Organiser, Ed Horwich commented: “This is the second year that we’ve held the awards exhibition here, we’ve had such great support from the region. We’ve seen a significant increase in the numbers of photographers entering from Newcastle and the North East. There is impressive representation from local artists like Mike Slawski and, of course, Mark Westerby who is no stranger to the Biscuit factory, being a regular exhibitor in his own right”.
The exhibition showcases a diverse range of talent, from From Rob Withrow’s brooding portrait of footballer Wayne Rooney, to breathtaking landscapes by Mike Henderson and Andew Haslam, and Nick Brown’s amazing action shot of a canoeist heading over a waterfall.
SUN has been running since 1988, promoting commercial work outside of London, and continues to gain momentum with over forty percent more photographers entering this year, as they see the value of the exposure that the awards bring to their work.
Andy Balman, Gallery Director at the Biscuit Factory, one of this year’s judges, was key in selecting the Special Edition series of framed art prints that will also be for sale alongside the Awards images. Newcastle company MPS Photographic, of Carliol Square, are producing the framed prints again this year.
Special Edition features up to forty images from twenty two photographers. Ed continued: “The Special Edition was an innovation we created just for our visit to the Biscuit Factory last year. But the enormous interest and print sales at last year’s exhibition mean it is now a regular feature wherever the SUN Awards are exhibited. The prints as well as being superb examples of the best commercial photography are also fantastic images in their own right and people who enjoy the show can buy their own framed prints of their favourite pictures.”
